Have you ever agreed to do something for a particular price - and then immediately regretted it?  I have, and I know I’m not alone!

Just today, I had two conversations with self-employed clients and friends who were in a bit of regret about “underpricing” themselves.  Wanting to make their customers happy, they had made themselves unhappy.  They had traded their services for cash, and had given themselves the short straw of the trade.

Whether you own a business, work a job, or or invest in various relationships, organizations or causes, you are constantly “trading” your energy for something else of value.  Maybe you trade your time for dollars with clients or an employer; maybe you’ve traded your career for the chance to be a stay-at-home parent.

No matter the situation, it can be hard to ask for what we want in the trade.  And sometimes, we betray ourselves by asking for less than we know we’re worth. Continue Reading »

I’ve heard it said before that we are Spiritual Beings having a Human Experience.  I’m not sure who originated that saying, but it’s one that I think many of us can identify with.

I believe that as spiritual beings, we share many characteristics of the Source or the Spirit from which we come.  As Wayne Dyer would say, a slice of pie is likely to be the same kind of pie as the pie it came from! You wouldn’t have a piece of apple pie that was cut from a whole cherry pie.  (A simple yet profound metaphor to ponder….) Continue Reading »

Memorial Day

In this time of reflection, let us remember

What our forefathers have discovered

What our ancestors have taught us

What our soldiers have sacrificed

(and what those sacrifices might have to tell us about the importance of peace.)

magnetA few years ago, the DVD phenomonon “The Secret” (and subsequent books and cd’s) produced by Rhonda Byrne popularized the Law of Attraction.  Not a new concept, the Law of Attraction (LOA) says that we attract what we think about.  Our thoughts and (especially) our feelings are, literally, “magnetic” and will attract more of the same.

“The Secret” was applauded for savvy production and marketing, bringing the LOA concept into the mainstream.  Meanwhile, others criticized it for being overly simplistic, too focused on materialism, or simply too “woo-woo.” Continue Reading »

I spoke with a friend tonight who is in the process of filing for bankruptcy.  She has lost her livlihood, her credit, her car, even her own place to live.

After two failed business ventures followed by a health challenge that left her briefly incapacitated, she finds herself now with mountains of debt and no real income.  Falling on the mercy of family and friends who have fed and sheltered her the last few months, she has retreated to an earlier profession, wrangling a few hundred dollars a month from friends and aquaintances who can afford to hire her on occasion.

She has lost what most people would consider “everything.”

As I spoke to my friend, I noticed a palpable shift in her since we last spoke a number of weeks ago.  Was it depression?  Resignation?  Anger, shame, or blame? Continue Reading »

I live by Lake Marcel, poised between the Snoqualmie Valley and the Cascade foothills, between the towns of Carnation and Duvall (east of Seattle).  It is peaceful, idyllic.  It looks like the kind of place you’d go to visit your financially-secure retired relatives in their second home… nestled between tall fir trees, near the community beach.

Part of my daily routine is to walk around the lake, weather allowing.  I walk to stretch my legs, clear my mind, and… to listen.  Sometimes, I hear Spirit speaking in Nature - perhaps through a bird or a tree, and often, through a living metaphor.  Continue Reading »

The little opt-in box to the right says that my “Overcoming Financial Stress” E-book will be available in February.  (That sounded reasonable enough in January when I wrote it.)

Well, in case you’re wondering… it’s March 10, and I’m still writing it!  What’s the saying?  “Man makes his plans, and God laughs.”  I’m estimating now that it will be done next week.  (No snickering, please!)

The e-book addresses Financial Stress from both the inside and the outside.  It will give you valuable tips on how to reframe your mindset to reduce stress, and also specific strategies to help you lower your expenses, credit card payments, and even mortgage.

I’m updating the ebook with some valuable information and updates for those who are behind on their mortgage payments.  12% of Americans are now in default on their mortgage payments.  Fortunately, there is more help available than ever, and in many cases it is not necessary to hire a loan modification company at $2500, $3500, or more.  Continue Reading »

A Multi-Millionaire’s Advice on a Spending Plan

Tim Robinson with King5/KongTV (NBC affiliate) interviewed me about some Tips for Financial Health.   Check out the video

It was really interesting to see how things get chopped and edited down(logically and necessarily, because they are NOT going to run the whole 20 minute interview!  Not even mass murders get that much time!)

I love to “give credit where credit is due,” and I must say (as I did in the interview, but it was edited out!) - the “Play Fund” suggestion is one I got from T. Harv Eker, creator of the Millionaire Mind Intensive.  Harv recommends dividing your discretionary income equally among several categories, such as:

confessionsofashopaholic2In this consumer-driven culture, it’s hard to separate what it means to “love and be loved,” apart from buying things (or having them bought for you).

Advertising slogans like “because your worth it!” are etched into our very being.

Valentine’s Day products and advertisements litter stores from New Year’s to mid-February.

Men are told to spend “two months salary” on an engagement ring to demonstrate their love.

And for most of us, it starts before we even speak.  Our parents begin buying us things on our special days - birthdays, Christmas, and so on.  This ritual continues and is supplemented by the “reward system” as we grow - we can have the Barbie, the new cd, perhaps even a car if we behave and keep our grades up.

Subtly (and not-so-subtly),  our conscious and subconscious minds learn to link being loved with being shopped for. Continue Reading »

The masculine brain is naturally wired to slay the dragon, kill the enemy, conquer the mountain, win the woman, make the touchdown.

Today marks the 43rd anniversary of our nation’s favorite football game:  The Superbowl.  I hope you’re enjoying good friends, good food, the half-time show, and those hilarious Superbowl commercials.  (I know I will be!)  But first, I thought I’d take a look at why men score more touchdowns, both in football and finances.

In my “Secrets of Wealthy Women” classes in February (see classes for details), we’ll be discussing how men and women think and learn differently about money.

Actually, to say “men” and “women” is a gross generalization.  To be more accurate, the differences are better described as “masculine” and “feminine” energy.  Continue Reading »
